From my results, I have found I am indeed an Explorer player type. From experience, I have preferred to explore in many genres of games whether that is action or narrative. In the narrative games, there are limitations but it doesn't stop me from trying to explore the settings and the objects available to view. With action games like Halo, I can explore by trying to hide and to achieve the best advantage points in fast spurts. I agree that I may be a socializer since I prefer to play with a friend on multiplayer, but I haven't played on an online game so the aspect of playing with large amounts of people who are strangers, may be intimidating, but it is exciting to know they can be from around the world.
P1 a) Structure
- Founded by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin but the co-president is Evan Wells. They are the chief executive officers
- The creative director is Neil Druckmann (known for work in Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us)
- Naughty Dog is a first-party video game designer
- Bruce Straley is the game director
- Evan Wells is the current president of Naughty Dog.
b) Platform Technology
- The Naughty Dog company only produces games for the PlayStation since the parent company is Sony (Interactive) Entertainment, who produces the PlayStation consoles.
- They haven't made any games that cross over to other consoles so there would be a limited audience for the company's games.
c) Game Types
- Naughty Dog produced The Last of Us, which is described as a 'genre-defining experience blending survival and action elements to tell a character driven story', which goes to show they try to blend genres for an enjoyable experience rather than keeping under the single genre.
- Naughty Dog also developed the Uncharted series, which is an action-adventure, third person shooter game, which differs from The Last of Us in genre and narrative.
- The games are successful because they are under major genres that the audience are bound to enjoy. The developers have also managed to design realistic characters that trigger the audience into feeling a range of emotions, throughout the game, following a smooth narrative.
- The Last of Us is classed as a single player game, but there can be 4-8 network players, though it would be a better experience whilst focusing on the game visuals and narrative.
- Uncharted is classed as both a single player and multiplayer game, available with a DLC.
d)Games on Multi Platforms
- Naughty Dog hasn't made any multi-platform games because it has a strong partnership with Sony, creators of the PlayStation, and there is no staff who can cater for developing on another platform, yet they are perhaps looking to expand by posting on the internet for people with experience.
- They have only produced games for the PlayStation 1, 2, 3 and 4 because the platform manufacturer is their parent organisation, showing that game manufacturers are more likely to cater for one platform rather than multi-platforms, if they are under a platform manufacturer like Naughty dog and Sony. This is much like Nintendo making only games for their own platforms rather than Xbox and PlayStation.
e) Regulatory Bodies
- There are numerous legal and regulatory considerations which games and software developers need to bear in mind when developing their products, such as:
- intellectual property rights and licenses
- consumer protection
- age ratings and classification
- advertising laws
- data protection and privacy
- gambling legisation
- responsibilities concerning staff and employment practices
- The VSC is the PEGI administrator in the UK which gives age ratings and guidance on games released, higher ratings warn parents and the audience whether the content is violent or if there was an sexual nature. it stops underage players from purchasing the game in the store but it doesn't mean that they can't online.
- The BBFC follows similar rules, though they work with film classification and classify the same things as PEGI, under high ratings.
- self-regulation would involve following your own rules that are set by yourself, it would mean you wouldn't push yourself to do something since you would hopefully know your own limits.
f) Developmental Software
- “Crash levels ended up being 32 to 40 megs usually, but the machine's memory was only two. Almost everyone else's games had to fit their levels into whatever you're working memory was, like maybe a meg.”
- Naughty Dog = the Technical Artist GDC presentations I've viewed have shown their environment pipeline to use Maya, probably used for Uncharted too.
- Autodesk Maya, commonly shortened to Maya, is a 3D computer graphics application that runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, originally developed by Alias Systems
- They also use 3Ds MAX for level/environment design
B:Bartle Taxonomy
I would assume I was an explorer in gaming but I haven't played any online games so I have found satisfaction by exploring in games like Assassins Creed, Halo and GTA, where it allows you to explore the maps without much urgency, though sandbox games would prove to be better since they are open worlds to explore. I would say I could also be an achiever since I would want to beat the person I was playing against, yet this could also be seen as a Killer gamer since I would try to dominate the other player and would most certainly be achieved by killing a lot of people.
Definitions:
An Achiever focuses on attaining status and achieving preset goals quickly and/or completely and are engaged by achievements.
Killers focus on dominating other players and focus on winning, their rank and direct peer-to-peer competition. These players are engaged by leader boards and ranks.
Socialites focus on developing a relationship and drive to develop a network of friends and contacts through socializing, they are engaged by friend lists and chats
Explorers focus on exploring and have a drive to discover the unknown and are engaged by obfuscated achievements
